Maths

Maths at Cantell is designed to develop and build upon the different skills and knowledge that students will have been studying throughout their years in primary school. Students starting in year 7 will follow the Cantell Mathematics Secondary Learning Journey which is a five year scheme of work designed to ensure full coverage of the national curriculum and develop a thorough understanding of core mathematical concepts. This builds to create an eleven year journey when combined with the maths that will have already been studied at primary school.

The five main areas of maths are:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Geometry and Measure
  • Probability and Statistics

The spiral nature of our curriculum allows students to regularly revisit units of work so that this knowledge becomes embedded. Our specialist maths teachers ensure that the different strands are interleaved within units to enable students to apply the maths that they have learnt in unfamiliar scenarios. As a core subject, all students will study maths at GCSE. All students sit the Edexcel exam for maths at either foundation or higher tier. In addition to the core GCSE, we also offer GCSE statistics as an option at KS4 together with the opportunity to study further maths for those looking to extend their mathematical learning beyond GCSE

As well as wanting students to become more able mathematicians, we recognise the significance of mathematical confidence in everyone’s day to day lives. We therefore run a Money Week in school when students get the opportunity to discover more about how maths is relevant to their day to day lives both now and in the future. There are a number of extra-curricular clubs which run to encourage mathematical and problem solving skills such as chess and strategy board games as well as maths club. Each year, we enter students for the UKMT maths challenges and will arrange presentations at school to show how STEM subjects can be used in future careers.
